This condiment originated in China about 2500 years ago, and was later taken to Japan (7th century) by Buddhist monks. Its flavor is less concentrated than Tamari.
Soy sauce can be added directly to food and is used as a seasoning. It is a savory condiment, but it contains a sweet touch. Soy sauce can be stored at room temperature.
